African Reed Thatch
Enhance the authenticity of your backyard tiki bar or other structures with African reed thatch.
African Reed Thatch
giving the appearance of authentic Africa huts with a thick layered reed look.
Made from a Southern Africa cape reed known as Dekriet reed. The heavy duty panels have a thick layered look when installed. The individual reeds are multi-colored in natural tans, brown, green and amber colors. As it ages, the color will fade to a greyish tan.
It’s a thick panel with a flexible binding strip. The flexible binding allows the panel to bend and conform to unusual roof lines. Can be used on existing roofs or on wood or steel frames, such as umbrellas, over hangs, DIY tiki huts, awnings etc.
The panels can be used in extreme weather conditions. The wind will flow through the thatch when used with an open frame. When installed as instructed, African reed thatch is 99% waterproof.
African reed thatch allows trapped heat to escape through the reeds making the temperature 5-10 degrees cooler under your tiki hut then under other shade structures.
- Longevity is 4-5 years in wet climates and longer in dry climates
- Makes your structure cooler, as the reed lets hot air escape.
- No maintenance or cleaning
- No need to cover for weather
- 99% waterproof
- 5-10 degrees cooler
- fire retarding available
Installation is very simple and doesn’t require any special skills. Can be installed in neat straight lines or soft wavy irregular lines. Minimum suggest pitch is 30 degrees. Steeper pitches increase the longevity and water proofabilty of the thatch. African reed thatch is to be installed in layered courses, at 12″ on center, overlapping the previous course by 5″. The panels can be clipped onto 1/4″ metal frames, or nailed with 2″ nails or stapled to battens or a plywood sub roof. Top cone available for round structures.
To get the quantity of panels you will need for your project, divide roof surface area by 2.5.
